Become a foster family

Become a foster family

You can become a foster family regardless of your lifestyle. Whether as a single person, as a couple, patchwork or same-sex couples, whether with or without own children or already close to retirement age.

As a foster family, you take in children and adolescents (0-18 years) who cannot grow up with their biological parents temporarily or for a longer period of time. They provide you with a safe place and create an atmosphere in which children can take developmental steps and young people can regain stability. They help to develop future perspectives.

For this demanding task, we require a great deal of commitment and enjoyment. This requires empathy, openness and goodwill, but also clarity and willingness to engage with your counterpart and their individual life situation.

This requires your stability in many areas of your life. All members of the prospective foster family must agree to take in a foster child.

Suitability clarification

Foster families need a permit to take in a foster child. In the admission process, prospective foster families provide information about their motivation to become foster parents, as well as about their basic values and worldview. Information on health, finances and reputation is also requested. Families living in Basel City are checked for their suitability by the Youth Welfare Office and receive a corresponding order. Families from Baselland go through this process via the Center for Foster Children in cooperation with the KESB of your place of residence, from which you will receive the foster placement permit in the last step.
